Lists FAQs and requirements for Georgetown Summer Programs

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. offers a number of summer programs that fit the needs of any high school students seeking higher education in the USA. In past years, a number of Occam students have attended these programs and have benefitted greatly from them. Any student who has completed their first year in high school and has no academic or school suspensions on their record is eligible to apply for admission.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • When do institutes start? There are two five-week sessions offered for students seeking to earn college credit. The first starts in early spring, and the second in early summer. Georgetown’s other acclaimed, non-credit-based programs usually begin in mid-June.
  • Around what time is the application deadline? Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but it is important to apply early to ensure that the student has enough time to obtain their F-1 visa and submit TOEFL scores if they are attending a program that offers credit. When applying to study abroad, the visa process is often the most time-consuming!
  • What kinds of courses are offered? The course catalog varies every year, but high school students will be able to choose from a wide variety of introductory higher education courses in subjects like accounting, information technology, and finance. Advanced students also have the opportunity of enrolling in the Summer Honors Intensive, which allows them to earn a full semester’s worth of credits in one summer. This intensive program lasts for ten weeks.
  • What other non-credit programs are offered? Students who want more practice in English, or whose TOEFL scores do not qualify them for the credit-based programs, may enroll in the three-week long English Intensive College Prep program. Here, they will take English language courses and spend time with native speakers. Another option is the College Preparatory Program, which is a three-week institute focused on SAT preparation, math and writing improvement, and study skills. Finally, students may choose to participate in an immersive institute in a specific field for up to three weeks at a time. These immersion programs allow students to interact with renowned faculty in upcoming fields and collaborate with other students.

To complete the online application, you will need:

  • Teacher/administrator/counselor recommendation
  • Georgetown University summer financial aid application (optional)
  • High school transcript (not needed for non-credit programs)
  • Standardized test scores (not needed for non-credit programs)
  • English proficiency requirements: includes TOEFL and IELTS exams, unless the student attends a school that primarily teaches in English.
  • Personal essay (300-500 words)
  • $50 application fee Georgetown University

If accepted, all international students are required to have medical insurance coverage for the entire time they are on campus. This coverage may be purchased through the university, and costs vary based on how long the student will be there. It is important that students are protected when studying abroad.
